A few of her favorite things
After a long hiatus from the blogosphere and many witty posts by Papa Morris, Mama Morris is back with an update on everyone’s favorite little Morris…
As we continue to wait with bated breath (and drool-cloth) for the first tooth to appear, Asha Ruby rapunzels her way towards the fourth haircut of her brief lifetime. A few of her favorite things to do these days (besides grow hair) include hanging upside-down, experiencing the delight of finding something noisy to kick with her foot behind her, and discovering and sucking on doorstops.
Asha’s creeping technique has developed such speed and grace that Mama and Papa Morris are predicting that she may have a future as an Olympic butterfly-stroke champion. Despite her skills at creeping transport, it looks like she may be a 4-wheel-drive baby soon as she continues to practice and perfect her crawl position (sometimes even in the middle of the night).
Asha Roob-a-doob delights us with an ever-increasing vocabulary including such syllables as ma, ba and wa. She also enjoys expressing her enthusiasm for language by entertaining Mama and Papa with increasingly raucous shrieks and whoops (also sometimes in the middle of the night). Mama and Papa Morris are supporting Asha Ruby’s (quiet) use of language by offering a baby sign language class in our home on Sundays for six weeks. Asha and 9 of her baby-friends and their parents come each week to learn new signs and ways to communicate with our wee ones about such existential topics as eating, diapers and animals. We hope to one day have the pleasure and satisfaction of little Roobs telling us with her hands that she wants “more cookies” or that she is “all done” with her broccoli.
Besides her strides in mobility and language, other new skills include an increase in her ability to harness the human power of opposable thumbs through developing her “pincer grasp.” This means that little Rubycakes can now pinch Mama many times a day as well as pick up very small objects and put them into her mouth. Coupled with Roob’s mobility, this new skill means that Mama Morris spends much of her day as an expert floor cleaner and surveyor -- keeping the floor clear of such hazardous baby dangers as peas, beans and thumb tacks.
Although Asha Ruby has fortunately not had the opportunity for a thumb tack to make it from fingers to mouth, she has been increasing her eating (if not swallowing) entertainment by sampling such gastronomical delicacies as apple, carrot, broccoli and cat hair. Bon appétit!
